Women’s Month: How Creativity and Passion Shape Meaningful Spaces for Women Designers

Women have long been at the heart of the home. Not just as caretakers, but as visionaries shaping the way we experience our spaces. This Women’s Month, we celebrate the creativity, resilience, and unique perspectives of women in the world of home decor, interiors, and styling. From designing soulful spaces to overcoming industry challenges, these three women share their insights on what it means to build a home with purpose.

A Home Filled with Soul by Karen

For Karen (@milkandhoneylife), home is a reflection of love, creativity, and the people who fill it. As a mother, she finds joy in crafting a space where her children feel safe and encouraged to express themselves.

“My children are my everything. I take great pride in creating a home that makes them feel safe and seen,” she shares. “They are very creative, and fostering their natural talents and being able to have a space that they are able to add to the corners of this home has made living here even that more wonderful.”

When it comes to creating a cozy and stylish home, Karen believes there’s no one-size-fits-all formula.

“I believe everyone has their own vision of what that looks like and feels like for them. I consider my home a soulful space. It is filled with pieces that have been collected and thoughtfully brought in to reflect my love language,” she explains.

Her home is layered with vintage finds, one-of-a-kind handmade pieces, French ware, pottery, muted tones, vintage rugs, lace, and original artwork created by her children. But for her, creating a warm atmosphere is more than just decor—it’s a daily ritual.

“I light candles every day, open curtains to let the sun come in, light the fireplace when weather permits, and nothing is saved for a special occasion because every day that you have life is worth celebrating,” she says.

When asked about her favorite brands, Karen gravitates toward those that stand out on their own, such as Shoppe Amber Interiors, Olive Ateliers, and Sylvie (@sylviehome). But she values uniqueness above all.

“I mainly buy vintage or from talented artisans that create something out of the ordinary. Putting a home together in such a way that is unique and reflective of you is all that really matters.”

From Courtrooms to Interiors by Ashita

Ashita’s (@ashita_designs)  journey into interior styling took an unconventional path.

“I started my career as a lawyer, but I always had a more creative bent,” she shares. “When the 2020 pandemic hit, like most people, I was questioning my life choices while stuck at home. During the same time, we had bought the house I currently live in, and it became my blank canvas to experiment with my creativity. It helped me take the leap into the design space.”

For those looking for simple home styling tips, she encourages drawing inspiration from the world around you.

“I always tell my clients that if you are not able to envision how certain colors will look together, look out in nature. Nature is the best artist out there, and I truly believe that if it looks beautiful in nature, it is going to look beautiful in your own home.”

She also suggests looking inward.

“The other tip I always like to give is that the place to look for inspiration is your own closet. Those are the colors that truly reflect your personality, and so would your own space—you will feel right at home.”

When asked about her favorite space she’s designed, she answers without hesitation:

“It might sound biased, but I would say it will be my own house. I was able to take all kinds of design risks and liberties and was able to experiment with the vision I had—and I loved how it came out.”

Designing Spaces That Inspire by Deanne

For Deanne, founder of Twenty Third by Deanne (@twentythirdbydeanne), interior design is about more than just creating a beautiful space: it’s about building a home that reflects and supports your life.

“Home is something you nurture, cherish, and make your own. It’s deeply personal—a reflection of your lifestyle, values, and the things you love,” she explains. “For many women, home is not just a space but an extension of themselves. Being able to design a space that supports your daily life and brings you joy is a powerful experience. When you create something that truly complements your lifestyle, it becomes more than just a place you live—it becomes a place that inspires and grounds you.”

As a woman in the design and business industry, Deanne has faced challenges, particularly when it comes to competition among women.

“One challenge I’ve noticed is that women in the industry aren’t always as supportive of each other as you’d hope. The design and business worlds can be highly competitive, and that competitiveness can sometimes create a scarcity mindset—where it feels like success is limited, and we have to fight for our share.”

Her solution? A mindset shift.

“I overcame this by embracing an abundance mindset. The truth is, there’s more than enough for everyone—the market is big, there’s endless business to go around, and success isn’t a zero-sum game. Instead of comparing myself to others, I focus on my own journey, my own business, and tending to my own ‘grass.’ Shifting my perspective to collaboration over competition has not only made me a better designer but has also led to more meaningful connections and opportunities.”

For young women hoping to enter the world of interior design, Deanne shares valuable advice:

“Stay true to your style, but never let yourself get stuck in one box. Design is constantly evolving, and so are you. Be open to change, embrace new ideas, and allow your style to grow with you. Trends will come and go, but your ability to adapt, innovate, and refine your creative voice is what will set you apart.”

She also encourages focusing on your own journey rather than getting caught up in comparison.

“The design world can feel overwhelming with so much inspiration around you, but comparison will only slow you down. Instead, pour your energy into building your unique perspective, refining your craft, and creating work that excites you. There’s space for everyone in this industry—trust that what you have to offer is valuable.”

Whether you’re a designer, an enthusiast, or someone who simply finds joy in decorating, these stories serve as a reminder that home is not just where you live, it’s where you express yourself.

Women have always played a vital role in shaping the world of home decor and interiors. Through their unique perspectives, bold choices, and passion for design, they continue to redefine what it means to create a home.

This Women’s Month, let’s celebrate the power of creativity, the beauty of individuality, and the women who turn houses into homes.
